All The Weird Things That Exists In China
Communist China is biggest country in the world with a population of approximately 1.4 billion people in China proper alone; this does not include countries and territories that they have invaded and claimed under the Chinese flag, such as Tibet. Since the United states lifted the embargo on Communist China in 1971 under President Nixon who decided to end the 21‐year embargo on trade with China, it has become one of the greatest countries in very short time leaving all the world fascinated by their culture and advancement in technology.
China has taken advantage of the COVID pandemic that came out of Wuhan, China which economically collapsed the rest of the world to catapult its economy ahead and far surpass its projected growth. With the social upheaval in the western world where American politicians and its citizens are fighting over social justice issues, China is building its nation to take over United State’s position as a Super Power. No doubt China Will Be The World’s Next Super Power. China’s rise can be termed as the result of the country’s exceptional and bizarre traditions which separates them from any other country of the world. What makes them so extraordinarily different? We are here to show you that! Click on the next slide to see these exceptional facts and bizarre qualities of the Chinese people.
Summer? Let’s Eat Dogs
Yulin, a major city of China, is famous for its people eating dogs. Yes, you heard that right… the Chinese has a tradition of eating man’s best friend. To the western world and even parts of the eastern world, this is the most outrageous act to the human race’s favorite companion. Yet in the name of good fortune in their lives, the people of Yulin believed that at the end of every winter, they have to torture and slaughter approximately 15,000 dogs for their Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival.
So according to a report from a renowned business magazine, around 10 million dogs are torture and killed each year to satisfied the growing consumption of dogs in China. Sadly, China is not the only country in Asia that consume dogs but they are by far the largest of all Asian countries. Due to the Wuhan Virus (COVID) pandemic, there are now certain cities, such as Shenzhen who have banned the killing and consumption of dogs.
Here’s another weird fact from China. Bats Brings You Fortune. It is a popular belief in China that bats are a sign of good luck. The belief stems from hundreds of years of Chinese folklore and legends. No wonder at the onset of the COVID pandemic, it was believed that the COVID novel virus came from bats. Little did we know that the COVID virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology; funded by no other than Dr. Fauci from National Institute of Health, and the COVID virus made its way to the wet market which was located right next to the research building. Hopefully bats now have lost it’s status and good fortune after this.
Eating Eggs Boiled in Boys’ Urine
Like the Japanese, Chinese too has this time honor tradition of eating boiled eggs in virgin young (usually the urine is collected from boys younger than the age of 10) boys’ urine, and consider this tradition as a symbol of health. In China, but specifically to the Donyang province, the Chinese believed that eating urine boiled eggs increase immunity and ease blood flow throughout the body. This tradition dates back for centuries and is still practiced to this day. Today, the market price for a boiled egg in virgin boy’s urine is about twenty-four cent (USD).
A “Facebook” For Those Who Had or Aspire to Have Plastic Surgery
There is no legitimate access to Facebook in China since 2009. When it was found that the rebellions in Urumqi were using Facebook to communicate, the government under the leadership of Hu Jintao banned the social networking site. Now, Facebook is considered as a threat in the Communist country.
China has one designated social network for plastic surgeries, named as “So Young”. In this network, the people who have gone through plastic surgeries provide useful advice from their experience. They talk about the necessary requirements of plastic surgery with the people who are going for this procedure and share their reviews about the best clinics in China.
Cosmetics Must Be Tested First On Animals
China has a law that states that any cosmetic product has to first be test on animals and only then is the product allowed to be sold in China. This test has to be taken by all the products including famous imported products. For this reason, brand name around the world will have a separate animal testing product facility to test their products on animals so that they can be sold in in the Chinese marketplace.
These are the top international beauty companies that do animal testing for ALL their products in order to sell in China:
- Lancôme
- L’Oréal Paris
- Estée Lauder
- Olay
- Maybelline New York
- SK-II
- Innisfree
- Inoherb
- Clinique
- Laneíge
Traffic
With so many people in China, Traffic is an issue. China hold the longest traffic jam in history. Back in August 10, 2010, there was a traffic jam in Beijing that lasted for twelve days and stretched sixty-two miles long. Talk about being stuck in traffic.
Another random weird thing about China is that due to a increase of walking while texting accidents in China, in September of 2014, the City of Chongqing municipality installed the “first mobile phone sidewalk in China.” This was to increase safety for pedestrians specifically in the touristic area of the city.
Crickets: Sport and Food
Chinese have weird pets too. In China, people carry crickets as their pets and eat them as a food source. Moreover, Chinese have a tradition of arranging fights of crickets. The tradition has been followed from 14th century and still continues as a tradition in which Crickets are fought.
And if you deep fried the crickets or any other dish that is rich in fats, they will gloves to eat with. . While one roams around in China, they can observe people eating food while their hands are gloved. The reason behind that is simple: The restaurants offer gloves with oily foods so as to ensure that the customer does not get his clothes dirty with those oily hands.
Green-Bean Popsicles. Chinese cuisines are eaten throughout the world, and they are loved too. But if one has not tried their traditional ice popicles made with milk and green/red beans, they are missing something really awesome!
People Still Live In Caves
The dichotomy of China is immense. On one end, it is a country with the most skyscrapers in the world yet there are a portion of its people living in caves are a picture of the Stone Age. But in China, despite technological advancement, there are people who live in caves. These people are although confined by their government to live in these caves but they have accepted this lifestyle.
China is full of skyscraper. The economic might of the country is shown by the amount of skyscrapers it has. China has a huge amount of sky tall buildings and nearly 300 skyscrapers in its cities.
Building Construction, Meh
China has become one of the fastest growing nations in the world and with that a massive effort to build super structures. They have the most skyscrapers in the world but sometimes they run into a “issues.” After the home owner of this last standing house (image on the Left) refused to give up his land for demolition for a highway to be built, the city decided to build the highway around his property in Wenling, China.
The left image is an example of poor planning and execution. The Chinese developer accidently built an apartment complex the stretched to the middle of a highway… what did they decide to do? They left it as is.
300 Million Smokers; 50,000 Cigarettes per Second
China is the largest nation in the world. China proper which includes five different provinces (not including countries and territories that they have claimed such as Tibet and Mongolia) has to date 1.3 billion people. It is the nation that has a significant number of smokers. According to an international health institution (WHO- World Health Organization) report, China has a population of approximately 300 million active smokers in the country and its industry is responsible for supplying 42% of total cigarettes in the whole world. In addition to this, nearly 50,000 cigarettes are lit in one second in China.
World Largest Dam and Longest Railway
Chinese are remarkable engineers, an example of their efficiency in engineering is the “Three Gorges Dam”. The hydro-electric gravity dam is considered to be the largest reservoir of water producing electricity and it is also believed that this dam has alone reduced the rotation of Earth. It is because the dam can store 39.3 km3 of water at once. This amount of water when raised to the height of 175m above the level of sea, completely changes the inertia of Earth and decreases its rotational speed. Should the “Three Gorges Dam burst, it will cause tidal waves that will essentially wipe out full cities and will put nearly four hundred million of its citizen at risk, meaning they will die.
China also has a very, very Long Railway. China is home to one of the longest railway lines on Earth that runs over eight thousand miles across right countries; from Yiwu, China to Madrid, Spain. These intertwining iron tracks are so extensive and complex that if one wishes to cover a whole circuit around Earth, he can just take a train and keep on those tracks! All of these tracks account for more than the length of one loop around Earth.
One-month Bedrest For Women After Childbirth
China has a tradition of making their women bed rest for one month after they have given birth to a child. This tradition is known as “Sitting Month” In this period of time, women are not allowed to take part in any activity of daily life, not even walking or taking a shower. In China, the ladies are given a rest of 30 days after they give birth.
This norm in China is called as the Sitting a Month. The new mothers do not walk, take bath, or even drink chilled water during this period of recovery and is perhaps the one time in a mother’s life that she is totally pampered and taken care of.
Courtesy and Respect for the Women In China, it is a cultural value and a norm not to let females carry something—whether heavy or light. That is why one can find Chinese men holding the groceries and other things all by themselves. And, this value is not only limited to China. Nearly all the Asians respect and practice this.
Male Outnumbered Female
According to several reports, China is witnessing a demographic change: There are more males than females in the country—and the gap is predicted to widen. The Chinese national government estimated that in 2012, there were 40 million more males than females in its population. As of 2020, there are 34 million males of marrying age that have been unable to find their female partners. This is cause a huge upsurge in human trafficking from neighboring countries such as Viet-Nam which shares the southern border of China.
For many year under the one-child policy that was proposed in 1978 and enforced under Deng Xiaoping in 1979, many couples opted abort a female baby and only wanted to keep a male baby in order to carry the family name. Due to this, today more than 52 percent of the population is male. To put that into perspective, there are over 50 million more male than there are females in China today! Because there is such a lack of females in China, the one-child policy was modified in the early mid 1980s in order to allow rural parents a second child if the first was a daughter. It was not until 2015 that the Chinese government, nearly more than three decades later before the government allowed a two-child limit policy for the rest of the country.
China Is Full Of Pigs
Pigs are considered to be the source of meat in all around the west. But you will be shocked that nearly half of all the pigs in the world are in China. Chinese use pigs to make meat products like bacon and export it to other countries.
A report states that more than one billion of these animals i.e. pigs, are slaughtered annually to satisfied the appetite of the Chinese. They love their pork so much that in 2013, a Chinese company bought Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork producer located in North Caroline, United Sates for was for nearly $5 billion — more than the company’s market value. The rich Chinese will only purchase pork imported from United States pigs as they see it as better quality than their locally raised porks.
Hymen Surgery Is Common
The Virginity Complex crisis has long been an issue for women in this world. In China, the women are also serious victims of this crisis. In order to “preserve” their virginity typically before a serious relationship that will lead to marriage, the Chinese women will spend some serious money for hymen surgery. Often times these women are no longer “virgins” but want to present themselves as one. Some women who indeed are virgins, will have the surgery anyway to make their hymen membrane smaller so that their virginity is indeed intact, at least appearance wise.
Deceptive? Perhaps but in a culture that values the vir
Pandas are Loaned, Not Sold
Panda is the national animal of China. Although it is now an endangered species, back in 1982 Chinese Government delivered Pandas to other nations as a symbol of Friendship with China.
But now things have changed, China has considered pandas as a matter of national interest and their trade is completely forbidden. Moreover, those pandas which are traded to other countries like the United States, are not sold but are actually on lease. Under the Panda Loan Program that was established with China and the rest of the world, zoos in the US are paying rent in millions for the pandas they imported from China. They have even signed a ten-year contract which states that even if the panda gave an offspring, the zoo has to pay 400,000 more annually for the baby.
The Chinese Invented Toilet Paper
It was the Chinese people who invented the toilet paper for the first time, not the Romans. It is believed that in 871 A.D toilet paper was developed in China but the matter of fact is, it wasn’t Chinese people who used their invention but were Roman who utilized the paper and made it to their bathrooms. By the 1300s toilet paper was created for the emperors only, commoners were not allowed to use toilet papers.
Just as well because China has toilets but not toilet papers. More population means more requirement of resources. This is true with the case of washrooms too. China has a huge amount of toilets but these toilets don’t always contain toilet papers. A person has to take his own toilet paper in the washroom.
‘Ketchup’ and Football comes from China
Many are familiar that the Chinese invented gunpowder but did you know that they invented ketchup as well? Fast food is incomplete without ketchup. Although it is considered that fast food items have origins in the west but you will be astounded that the word “ketchup” comes from a Chinese word “ke-tsiap” which has a meaning of spice fish sauce. Sure it’s not exactly liquefy tomato with a ton of sugar but it is also believed that the first ketchup was invented by a Chinese in the 17th century.
Football (Soccer): MADE (Invented) IN CHINA! It was about 2,200 years back when some people stuffed different kinds of soft material e.g. feathers, into a sphere—and kicked it around. This was football or the “Tsu-Chu or Cuju.” Now, the football has evolved into a much sophisticated game, but we must give credit to the people of Confucian civilization who came up with the idea of it. In 10 A.D., China organized the first soccer club and an equivalent “World Cup” stared about the same time.
Also, it was the Chinese who were the first one to know about the Circulatory System. It was neither the Romans nor the Persians, but the Chinese who discovered that it is the heart which makes the blood move throughout our body. No wonder, now they have ventilators and are striving toward artificial hearts!
Largest Army, Pigeon Personnel and Officer’s Posture
China is not only the world’s most populous country with a population of close to two billion people, but it also maintains the world’s largest military—with 2.14 million active personnel. And, the numbers are going to increase as the government is spending more and more on their military.
A Uniformed Unit of Pigeons Ready to Respond to Call of Duty! The national army of China, PLA, maintains a full-fledged unit of Pigeons that are trained and remain at stand-by to serve their . . . country. The military personnel believe in their winged soldiers and are convinced that they would successfully carry the orders during special operations. Interesting!
Pins at the Collars! Soldiers are trained in a way that they must maintain an arrogant posture of the body. China has gone one step further in maintaining this posture for its soldiers. PLA’s soldiers carry a sharp pin in the collars of their uniform which forbid them from chin-movement.
15-Days off at New Year’s!
If you are a person who needs a lot of holidays to cope with the hangover of the new year celebrations, China is the place you are looking for! In China, the New Year is celebrated in a distinct manner. The country is officially off for a straight 15 days to celebrate the new lunar year, not the Western Gregorian calendar year. They end the 15 day celebration with a Lantern Festival that takes place on the fifteen day and last day of the celebration.

Copyrights Piracy
We the Pirates! China is one of those countries which have very high levels of piracy. According to a report, nearly 78 percent of the software installed in homes and offices in China are not bought legally but pirated.
China is a country of piracy and copyrights violations. Famous brands like Kentucky Fried Chicken (K.F.C.), Apple, and Tesla all struggled to maintain their originality in the Chinese market. It is because the country has no strict laws to ensure copyrights. For years, Yum Brands, the corporate entity that owns the United States brand KFC has been fighting against it’s fried chicken Chinese competitor K.F.G. for brand infringement.
San Francisco gets pollution from China
After the Chinese Revolution, China has gone under extensive industrialization and this process has created serious implications on the environment. Even in San Francisco, California which is thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean from China cannot save itself from Chinese’s pollution. A report of the Environmental and technology science department has shown that around 29% percent of the pollution of San Francisco comes from China through the Pacific winds.
Is so polluted in China, that the government issued oxygen, literally bags of fresh air for its elderly citizens who live in the most polluted and toxic cities in China. Lung cancer in China has skyrocketed since it went through its industrial revolution.
Government Control
Another of those bizarre facts about China is that there is no standards and rules for categorizing movies for specific audiences—like the international ones e.g. R-rated, etc. Instead of standards, the government has formulated a council that reviews the movies and censor the parts they deem inappropriate for the population. And it may be used for manipulation too! Here’s an example of government controlling what you watch. A Movie in which Animals Talk? Ban that! You might have watched Alice in the Wonderland. It is a nice movie in which animals talk and act something like humans. The Chinese took that very seriously, and found it insolent. So, what they did with it? They banned it!
And when they do watch television, about 1 Billion of the people watch TV at the same time! In 1978, the then government of China passed a law that made it obligatory to every TV channel to telecast news segment. Controlled by CCTV, the Chinese official TV, the program is now televised and watched by more than 1 billion people at the same time! With a population of almost two billion people, from cosmetic company to the National Basketball Association (NBA) to Hollywood studios, these companies and “sold out” celebrities such as LeBron James will succumb to whatever China wants. In the end money talks.
And…NO GAMING CONSOLES! The government of China has always been stressing the need, and has taken steps, to turn their population into a skilled one. So in 2000, the Communist China banned all video gaming consoles. One of those steps included the banning of gaming consoles, specifically the PlayStations, to make sure that the people keep on utilizing their time in positive manner. Luckily for game makers, the ban was lifted in 2015 so now it’s all back to business as usual… including but not limited to thumb and wrist carpel tunnel ailments.
Concubinage: Died 1949

Not only that, there used to be specific events that announced the transition of the girls from girl-hood to womanhood. Quinceanera is something like that as well in the Latin American culture.
Midnight Sunset
Yes! The miracle happened in the capital of Xinjiang, where a beautiful sunset took place in the middle of the night of winter season. This is due to the rotation of Earth and China’s geographical position.
Rise and Shine, it’s 10 o’clock! China is a vast country and contains many time zones in it. Due to its vast territory, the sun takes longer to rise in some provinces than others. For example, in one of the provinces (Urumqi), the sun rises at 10 am because of distance and the country’s geographical position.
Superstitions Galore!
Stay Away, Devil! I have got a Mirror! According to history, the Chinese used to believe in mirrors to protect them from evil spirits. Whoever owned a mirror, or had a mirror at home, was considered safe from hellish entities.
Number Four is BAD, Number 8 is Good. You will find that Chinese will do whatever they can to avoid number four like the plague. Because Four represent the circle of life: 1. Birth, 2. Old Age, 3. Sickness and finally 4. Death. Because Death is the fourth stage of life, it is viewed as unlucky. Conversely, if you double the four, you will get eight. And Chinese people will pay big money for any starting, and ending with number eight. Eight represents fortune, so if you home and office address has several number 8s… you are in luck.
Marriages with the Ghosts. China is full of weird traditions like the tradition of ghost marriage. In ghost marriage, a lady can get married with a dead person in order to enter the respected family.
Phoenix—it is Chinese! Dragons are revered in China and in Chinese mythology. Same goes for the mythical creature, the Phoenix. According to several studies, the Phoenix (Fenghuang) is a sign of virtue and grace. Originally there were males and females, but Yuans made it a sign of feminine power.
