Kate Middleton’s Most Scandalous Moments

Kate Middleton, a college student in Scotland, was thrust into the spotlight following the news of her relationship with Prince William. She was one of the most talked-about figures in the royal family and not a stranger to make headlines.

Adjusting to royal life is not easy as it takes a lot of effort. Throughout the years, Kate Middleton got a crazy amount of attention, and unsurprisingly, many of the controversies had to do with her fashion choices.

Here’s a look back at the Duchess of Cambridge’s most controversial moments over the years.

When Kate Fueled Controversy by Wearing Wedges

There’s little doubt that the future queen consort, Kate, likes to break the norms sometimes. She decided to wear Monsoon brand wedges while on an official visit to a cider farm. She definitely looked ravishing, as always, because the wedges completely suit her attire.

However, reportedly, the Queen wasn’t too happy with Kate’s choice of footwear on this particular visit (and many more others to follow suit). According to sources, the Queen doesn’t like wedges a lot and believes the style doesn’t go with royalty’s dressing. Now we know why Kate only wears wedges when she’s at events sans HRH.

Kate Not Wearing her Engagement Ring

We have hardly seen Kate without her engagement ring. The stunning solitaire has graced her hand ever since she got engaged to Prince William. But there was one rare moment England’s future queen was spotted in public without wearing her glamorous ring. So, what could have prevented her from donning her beloved ring and allowing gossip mongers to have a field day?

Well, it turns out that there was nothing to worry about since the Duchess took her ring off as a symbolic gesture to slow down the spread of coronavirus. Who would have thought that Kate would have gone this far to create awareness about COVID-19? She let go of her engagement ring; guys, it is time we also get some much-needed cues from Kate’s classy act and get serious about coronavirus SOPs, no?

Kate’s Tiff with Tatler

There’s not a day when a story isn’t written about the royal family. A British magazine focusing on fashion and lifestyle, Tatler published news about the royal Duchess. The magazine featured a story about the Duchess for which it alleged spoke to some of her closest friends. The sources claimed that the royal was distressed about the workload, which was followed due to Meghan Markle’s and Prince Harry exit as senior members of the Firm.

The Kensington Palace issued a rare formal response that article included “A Swathe of inaccuracies and false misrepresentations”. The royal ditch and Duchess sent legal letters demanding the story be taken down from the magazines, but the publications dismissed them.

Duchess Private Dressmaker

In 2012, the Duchess stepped out wearing a yellow dress with lace detailing on tour in the pacific. In 2013, the Duchess stepped out in an unlabeled beige dress creation complemented by Tara’s Jarmon beautifully designed coat. Her fans quickly tried to track down the dress designer but couldn’t find any clue.

According to the royal commentator, the dress was created by a private dressmaker. After the palace revealed news about her private dressmaker, many British businesses believed that they stopped benefitting from Kate Middleton’s effect, which increased their sales for particular styles and designs when the public spotted in one of their pieces.

Her Choice of Wedding Hair

The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton made history in many ways. It brought significant attention to the public, particularly about breaking the protocols to change traditions. Her wedding hair made the most news.

The Royal Duchess wore her hair pinned slightly towards the up, with most hair towards her back. Kate broke a tradition that lasted for 350 years when she wore her hair down. James Pryce created Kate Middleton’s look at Richard Ward Salon. Her Demi Chignon was complimented by Cartier Halo Tiara, which was loaned to Kate by the Queen. The tiara was bought by King George VI, which he bought for her mother back in 1936.

Bashed for Buying the Same Dress Twice

It is pretty unlikely for a princess to purchase the same dress. The royals have all the wealth and resources in the world, so why would anyone opt for the same dress repeatedly. Unless it is a mistake. And seems like that’s the case with our very own Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate made an appearance for the National Portrait Gallery Gala 2019 wearing an Alexander McQueen’s outfit. Nothing is wrong with the choice of dress, and it makes her look gorgeous. But, the issue is that it is the same floral print the Duchess wore back in 2017 for the BAFTAs. Spectators were quick to identify that Kate had worn two different but almost similar dresses within a short period. This issue remained a topic of debate for a long time among gossip mongers.

When She Broke Protocol Before Her Marriage (With Queen’s Permission, Of Course)

We all are well aware of how strict and stern HRH is when it comes to following royal protocols. So, would you believe it if we tell you that she allowed Kate Middleton to have it her way and break the protocol when she wasn’t officially a part of the royal clan?

That’s true, folks, and it happened during the summer of 2009 when the Queen spent some quality time for the first time with Kate. They were on a royal family trip to Balmoral, and the Queen allowed Kate to take photos at the estate, which usually is considered a violation of the protocol. In Kate: The Future Queen, royal expert Katie Nicholl wrote that this was Queen’s way to show her acceptance for the future Duchess.

“As a woman who has lived her entire life in the public eye, the Queen rarely lets her guard down, and very few apart from her family and closest friends get to see the real Elizabeth. Now Kate was being granted an audience in a most intimate capacity. It was a generous move on the part of the Queen and an astute decision, given that the romance seemed to be very serious”

When Kate Was Spotted Wearing Dark Nail Polish

Believe it or not, royals aren’t allowed to wear dark nail polishes. We aren’t sure if there’s any such rule in reality, but that’s what people generally assume because royal ladies are rarely seen wearing dark shades. Looking closely at her nail polish on her toes. Yes, Kate opted for a dark deep red polish color for her lovely toes.

However, Kate surprised everyone in 2012 when she stepped out for dinner in London, looking as stunning as ever. Her dress for the occasion was a sure shot hit, but the nail paint received severe criticism. It was later reported that darker shades like the plum color Kate is seen wearing in this photo were considered a violation of royal protocol. However, according to royal reporter Omid Scobie, there’s no protocol regarding nail paint.

Kate’s Engagement Dress Caused the Brand to Shut Down

The royals of Cambridge engagement were the front page of every magazine and newspaper. They announced the engagement ceremony to the media on November 16th, 2010. The Duchess of Cambridge chose a blue wrap dress that Issa London designed. The brand owners’ statement to PEOPLE Magazine stated that her company was thrilled with the royal’s decision of choosing their brand on a very momentous occasion.

Kate’s wrap blue dress was knee-length with a V neckline and bracelet-length sleeves. This dress was complemented with a belt at the waist, making the skirt fall in soft pleats. Her engagement dress is trendy today, and her fans will remember it for the years to come. Daniella Helayel, the owner of Issa London, stated that her company sales doubled with “Kate’s effect”.

When Kate Shared Her Favorite Pizza Topping

When Kate was visiting the Islington community garden located in North London, she was tasked to make pizza with local children. And that’s when she got the opportunity to share her baking skills as well as give her two cents on the subject of pizza toppings.

For an average individual, this would appear anything out of the ordinary. She was just having a casual conversation surrounding pizzas, so what could be controversial about that? But, when it is a royal making the statement, everything is scrutinized and judged. Royal reporter Rebecca English shared a video where Kate says: “Does anyone ever put bacon on a pizza? Bacon’s great. Do you not think that sounds good? I quite like that actually… It’s like having pepperoni but it’s not as spicy.” People were shocked that Kate found pepperoni spicy.

Kate Appearing in Shorts

Kate Middleton is a real inspiration for all women out there because the Duchess has worked a lot on keeping herself fit and active throughout her three pregnancies and even afterwards. So, when you have a hot bod, why wouldn’t you want to flaunt it and wear whatever you feel like wearing? However, seems that’s not allowed for royals as they have to follow a particular dress code and shorts aren’t a part of this code.

That’s why when Kate wore shorts in one of her public appearances recently, people went berserk. She had never worn shorts in over a decade, and this was why people were pleasantly surprised. But, most people criticized her attire choice, as she was the future Queen of England, and she is expected to dress elegantly.

Kate Opting to Wear Diana’s Earrings for Archie’s Christening

The earrings selection at baby Archie’s christening brought significant attention to the fans. Kate Middleton said that she wore Princess Diana’s earrings to pay tribute to her mother-in-law as Diana wore the same pair of earnings to Harry’s Christening in 1984. The Duchess said that by wearing them to Harry’s son christening, a piece of Diana could be included in the royal photos, even if his grandmother couldn’t be there.

These earrings, known as Collingwood Pearl Earnings, were given as a wedding present to the royal by the jewelers. Kate Middleton styled the earnirgs with a Stella McCartney dress, red pumps and a stylish headband. The royal fans accused Kate of “Upstaging Meghan” as they thought that why the new mother, Meghan Markle, wasn’t wearing the unique earrings from her mother-in-law.

Wearing Dolce & Gabbana to Wimbledon

In this photo, Kate seems happy and enjoying the game at Wimbledon with Meghan. Little did she know that the dress she had opted to wear for the event would create yet another controversy for her. There’s definitely nothing wrong with this outfit, as it is a beautifully designed dress.

However, it is the choice of brand Kate chose to wear for Wimbledon that caused all the havoc. Reportedly, Dolce & Gabbana was under fire at the time when Kate was spotted in this dark green dress. For your information, Dolce and Gabbana was hammered for posting a series of promotional videos on social media featuring an Asian model who finds it difficult to eat Italian food with chopsticks. The luxury brand was criticized for its racist approaches.

Amidst Prince William’s Cheating Rumors

For most of us, Prince William and Kate represent the picture-perfect British family. No one can doubt the couple’s sincerity towards each other. After all, they are the future king and queen of England. So, when Prince William was reportedly accused of cheating, all hell broke loose, and people started questioning the sanctity of the institution of marriage, so to say.

We won’t get into uncomfortable details, but things got really tense between the couple after the rumor that the Duke of Cambridge had a mistress, and that too, none other than his wife’s then-close married friend Sarah Rose Hanbury, Marchioness of Cholmondeley, made headlines. The news remained the talk of the town for the longest time. We don’t know how far was this true, but eventually, it severed ties between Kate and Rose, and they are no longer friends. It’s a known fact that the Palace is infamous for covering up royal affairs…such Prince Charles and Prince Andrew’s affairs to name a few.

Leaving Hospital Just After Giving Birth

After the birth of the third royal baby, Prince Louis, Kate Middleton made her public appearance on hospital steps. The appearance was made for an official photocall at the hospital steps. It was mere hours after the birth of the third royal baby.

Kate Middleton showed up in an effortless red dress carried with a pair of stilettos, with freshly blown dried hair, and her third royal baby, which was neatly tucked in her arms. High profiles, such as Keira Knightley, criticized the Duchess for setting unrealistic expectations for the mothers of the newborn. She wrote an essay, ‘The Weaker Sex’ in which she said, look stylish. Look beautiful, but don’t show your battleground.

The Tension Between Kate and Meghan

When we are talking about the various controversies of Kate Middleton, how can we forget to mention that infamous feud she allegedly had with her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle. Rumor mills were out and about spreading strange news about the growing tension between the two, and the feud took an ugly turn when people started taking sides.

Yes, that’s right. Within no time, people had formed Team Kate and Team Meghan, and royal fans were clueless over how they were supposed to react. Both were married to their favorite princes, who were brothers, so the entire situation was pretty complicated. For onlookers, the royal family had become some kind of a soap opera as every other day, there was a new rumor circulating about the two.

Mending Ties with Meghan with a Birthday Wish?

After experiencing such a hard time with Meghan since media outlets across the globe were speculating about the growing hostility between the sisters-in-law. There were all sorts of rumors circulating over the media, from Kate’s dislike for Meghan’s ethnicity to her previous gigs as an actress. As per the media, Meghan was regarded as an outsider and misfit in the royal family.

Prince William and Kate decided to mend ties with the new entrant into the royal household, Meghan, to put the alleged feud to rest. The couple posted a heartwarming birthday wish for Meghan. They shared a photo of them with Prince Harry, Meghan, and Prince Charles along with the caption: “Wishing a very happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex today!” However, people accused Kate of getting media attention and that there wasn’t any sincerity behind this wish. What’s your take on this matter?

The Controversial Engagement Ring

Who hasn’t heard about the entire controversy surrounding Kate’s engagement ring, which by the way, is gorgeous? The ring originally was the late Princess Diana’s. According to the Daily Mail, the Queen wasn’t too fond of this ring even when Diana picked it and Kate’s decision to make it her engagement ring made the Queen furious.

The ring features 12-carat oval-shaped Ceylon sapphires and a white gold band. The royals disliked it because the ring was featured on the crown jeweler Garrard’s catalog, which meant it was available for commoners to buy this £47,000 ring. This availability of the ring didn’t go well with the royals as the family likes to own rare jewels only.

In Diana’s will, she had left this infamous ring to her second son, Harry. It was his brother Prince William who had asked Harry for the ring so that he can proposed to Kate Middleton and Harry happily obliged… we wonder how many time Meghan have given Harry a hard time for giving this ring away.

Choosing Not to Wear Black at BAFTA Awards

In 2018 BAFTA Awards had an unofficial dress code of choosing black over any other colour to support the movement set by the Time’s Up/ Me Too campaign against sexual harassment. Instead of choosing black, the Duchess of Cambridge showed up in a dark green dress by Brit designer Jenny Packham, with a black velvet ribbon.

She chose green over black because the royal protocol prohibits the family members from making any political statement or being biased. Many criticized the royal for not wearing black to support the cause, but the black sash around her dress made some critics a subtle nod on choosing the dress.

But Wearing Black Soon After

Interestingly, on her very next public appearance, Kate chose to wear black. This move not only gave a subtle nod from Kate’s side that she was in favor of the cause but created controversy since the royals aren’t allowed to take sides or interfere in political issues. It is indeed surprising that Kate went with the flow and wore this black and white-coloured Frdem dress.

She wore it when Kate co-hosted the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange’s official reception. Naturally, she received backlash from Twitterati, and most of them regarded her as confused about her stance. People couldn’t determine whether Kate wanted to convey a message by wearing black or mocking the cause by choosing not to wear black when it was the unofficial dress code at the Baftas.

When Kate Refused to Present the Shamrocks to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards

This came as a huge shock to many. Back in 2016, the Duchess of Cambridge decided not to present the shamrocks to the first battalion of Irish Guards, which is usually a traditional practice on St. Patricks’ day. Understandably, Kate had surrounded herself with yet another controversy.

For your information, this tradition was started by Queen Victoria. She did it to show support to the Irish during the Boer War. Prince William attended the ceremony but Kate didn’t, for which the public bashed her for missing out on such an important event and staying home. The bashing intensified so much that Kensington Palace had to release an official statement that read:

“While the Duchess has accompanied the Duke every year since his appointment in 2012, and will do so again in future, this year she sadly could not make it because she is prioritizing time with her children before next month’s tour of India and Bhutan.”

When Kate Gave in to Pregnancy Woes

We all are witness to the fact that Kate Middleton’s pregnancies have been traumatic for the lady. Every time she got pregnant, she had severe morning sickness and was hospitalized. Kate couldn’t be as active publicly as she usually was because her condition didn’t allow her to feel energetic at all. In fact, she had to be bedridden for a long time.

So, we can understand why Kate decided to keep her public appearances minimal when she was pregnant with her third child. However, rumor has it that the Queen wasn’t too happy with this decision and openly expressed her dislike to Kate. According to HRH, the future queen consort cannot compromise upon her duties no matter what.

When a Lawsuit was Filed Against Kate’s Wedding Dress Design

Kate Middleton’s wedding dress and her overall look were fantastic, to say the least. She stole the hearts of millions with her elegance and stylish dressing. But unfortunately, her entire look and her choice of outfit have been criticized widely. We still wonder why. She looked breathtakingly beautiful in this Alexander McQueen gown designed by Sarah Burton, no?

However, this iconic dress became controversial when a lawsuit was filed against the lacy gown’s design by British designer Christine Kendall. Kendall sued the fashion house for copyright violation. Burton responded by categorically denying the claims made by Kendall and said that she had never seen her sketches or even knew Kendall. According to Kendall, the dress was heavily inspired by her sketches.

Including Lamb in their Wedding Feast

Kate and William’s wedding was a dreamy, fairytale-like event. It was a highly publicized event of the year, and the whole world’s eyes were on them. However, in sharp contrast to their royal wedding, the reception was quite intimate.

Three hundred guests attended their wedding reception. But that’s not what churned a controversy. The menu that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose to serve their guests claimed all the limelight, for all the wrong reasons, of course. Reportedly, one of the dishes on their dinner menu included lamb as the main course. That’s what the controversy was all about because lamb meat is generally a risky choice as the guests may like it or not.

When Kate’s Sister Didn’t Invite Meghan to her Wedding

Meghan Markle and Pippa Middleton didn’t get along well at all. There was immense tension between the two. However, this remained just a rumor for a long time until Pippa Middleton decided to publicly confirm that she didn’t like Meghan. And the event she chose to make it clear to the public was her own wedding.

When Pippa was getting married, it was the time her relationship with Meghan was the most hostile. So, the bride-to-be banned Meghan from attending the event. She decided to follow the “no ring, no bring” rule, which upset Kate a lot because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were dating and weren’t officially engaged. Meghan was in attendance on the wedding day, but she wasn’t seen at the ceremony.

When Queen Told Kate to Curtsy Royal Bloodline

Kate Middleton might be the future Queen consort, but she cannot take precedence when it comes to royal bloodline and natural-born princesses. Reportedly, Queen Elizabeth II wanted her to adhere to the rule of curtsy, where she had to greet the natural-born princesses by bending her knees, keeping one foot ahead of the other.

The Queen even updated the “Order of Precedence in the Royal Household” perhaps to ascertain Kate that whatever be her title in the future, she had to curtsy all blood princesses as a former commoner. This includes Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Alexandra. However, this rule is applicable only when Kate attends an event without Prince William. Meghan was also asked to follow the same rule, and she had to curtsy Kate too.

Kate’s Controversial Red Dress

We really have no idea why Kate’s wardrobe has garnered so many controversies. There’s no doubt that Kate’s dressing has been on point always, and she looks ethereal in almost every outfit she has worn so far. But, usually, her otherwise chic and fashionable dresses have remained a subject of debate now and then.

Therefore, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that this beautiful bright red dress Kate wore for the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant received backlash from social media and public. It became controversial because other royal family members were wearing muted tones, and Kate showed up in this red dress. Kate wore it to board the royal barge Spirit of Chartwell.

Marilyn Monroe moment

Kate Middleton and the wind just can never get along. She has many public incidents with the wind blowing her skirts to high heaven. For all the time this has happened, Kate has gracefully and charmingly shield herself from exposing her undies.

Wearing Fur

Kate Middleton loves fur and isn’t afraid of wearing it both on private and public events. From her real fox furs beanie hats to the her minks and rabbit furs hats, Kate Middleton wears it well despite the outrage from the internet and PETA advocates.

“If the Duchess of Cambridge’s hat is made with faux fur, PETA is delighted to see her take a leaf out of the Duchess of Cornwall’s book—Camilla reportedly swapped all her fur hats for luxurious faux-fur ones”

PETA director Elisa Allen.

The Dress That Won the Prince’s Heart

Charlotte Todd who studied fashion designed and textiles at the University of the West of England in 2000 designed this see-through black and gold slip dress with blue ribbon accents which she appropriately named ‘the art of seduction’ $30 dress that made history. She believes that when Kate Middleton becomes Queen, the dress will most likely be auctioned at more than $100,000.

‘The dress is a part of fashion history – the moment William could first have fallen in love with Kate – and that makes me really proud’

Charlotte Todd

The Royals Chose Wrong Outfits

Whenever the royal couples visit a place other than their own country, they ought to wear traditional clothes to represent the nation. The Duke and Duchess wore wrong ensembles to a dinner at the Solomon Islands during the 2012 tour. The wrong outfits that they wore were accidentally laid out in the royal couples’ suite and were asked to wear. The couple said that when they saw the dress, they noticed it wasn’t the same design they were asked to wear. They asked the Solomon Islands government for confirmation, reassuring them that the clothes were correct.

The royal couple was made aware of the mistake as they wore them to the dinner were not traditional ensembles of the island. They were wearing clothes that represented Cooks Island. The government understood that mistake was on their behalf and that the couple intended to wear Solomon Islands clothes. The government of Solomon Islands stated that wearing the dress did not offend them.

When New parents decided to take a holiday

In 2013, the coupled welcomed Prince George, and after a couple of months, they decided to take a vacation to the Maldives without the baby. Many fans criticized the royals move by saying that the couple shouldn’t leave an eight-month-old toddler behind while on vacation.

Some of the critics supported the idea of escaping to the Maldives as it was perfectly acceptable for parents to get a break from their parenthood. Prince George was just eight months old when the couple decided to take a vacation.

Kate’s Yellow Shorts and Sparkly Top

In 2008, the Duke and Duchess decided to break their relationship. Following the break, Kate made a fashion style statement for a festive event stepped out wearing bright yellow shorts paired with a flashy sequin top at a Day-Glo Midnight Roller Disco Party in London.

According to the Daily Mail, on noticing her bold move, Buckingham Palace countries were ‘appalled’ by her flashy appearance and said it was the most undesirable and unladylike display they have ever seen. Considering her age, 26, at the time, maybe fans of the royal family could have cut her some slack on the fashion department front.

When Kate’s Personal Nurse Committed Suicide

This happened in 2012 when two radio broadcasters impersonating HRH and Prince Charles managed to retrieve private information about the Duchess’ first pregnancy. A nurse named Jacintha Saldanha was caring for Kate as she battled with severe morning sickness, divulged the information mistakenly.

Unfortunately, three days after the prank’s airing, the nurse committed suicide. The royal household was shocked. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released this statement:

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha. Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.”
